Boat Building Technology Improvement Institute Lanka (GTE) Limited.
Boat Building Technology Improvement Institute (BTI) is an organization formed by the leading boat manufacturers in Sri Lanka with a prime purpose of promoting the development of the boat industry towards globally competitive sector.
The initiative stems from the destruction caused by the 2004 Tsunami that destroyed more than 15’000 fishing boats in Sri Lanka that had to be replaced. There also was a structural shift from traditional one-day fishing in coastal areas to deep sea fishing that required different types of boats for multi day use. There was also a deficiency in training capacity in boat building, especially with the use of fiberglass technology. The need for upgrading other related areas such as refrigeration, engine maintenance and repair, communication, navigation etc, was also evident. It was to cater to these needs that the concept of a training institute emerged, following wide discussions held with boat manufacturers. Since the object was the development of the fishing and boat building industry, it was decided that the institute should be established as an autonomous entity as a company limited by guarantee under the companies act in which the members would be the registered boat builders in Sri Lanka.

To be the pioneer knowledge provider in developing Sri Lankan boat building and fishing technology towards achieving international standards.
THE MISSION
We provide high quality training and related services in boat building and fishing technology to our stake holders such as boat builders and operators, multi day fishing community and newcomers to become internationally renowned.
By being fully equipped, well structured, self sustained professional centre, we shall continuously educate all our stake holders in boat and craft designing, building, operating, managing, trading etc., as applicable to promote boat building and fishing technology in Sri Lank, ensuring profitability of the industry.
